Weber Natural Gas Grill

Weber Natural Gas Grill

The company has always manufactured popular products for barbecuing fans. Below is a historic overview of the Weber Natural Gas Grills producer.

Weber was started in 1893 but it was only in mid 20th century that George Stephen (a yard grill user) unveiled the initial grill with a lid on top to protect from rain and wind. This allowed him to give his steaks a constant flame to prepare in any type of climatic conditions. This innovation was referred to as “George’s Barbeque Kettle”, which was a dome shaped grill with a curved lid on top. Weber has become the biggest producer of barbecue grills today.

Weber launched its first line Genesis grill in 1985. Due to the excellent quality of this grill, the Weber Genesis Grill continues to be around today. This model provides six hundred thirty seven square inches of total cooking area, provides stainless flavorizer bars and is available in 2 different models.

The Weber Spirit grill happens to be the tiniest of the Weber Natural Gas Grills. It provides an absolute cooking area of five hundred thirty six square inches and features porcelain covered cooking grates as opposed to stainless steel cooking grates like the other Weber Natural Gas Grill Designs.

Presently, the Weber Summit grill is considered second to none. The Summit Grill characteristics include added cooking shelves, simple ignition, quick to wash surfaces, numerous temperature regulators, and many add on attributes. It also comprises a 12 thousand BTU flush installed side burner. Among the best features of the Weber Summit Natural Gas Grill is the “Tuck Away” rotisserie spit which is wonderful for cooking chicken. The Summit offers a total cooking area of seven hundred sixty nine square inches and is wonderful to have if you would like to prepare food for a significant group of people.

Weber Natural Gas Grill Models Features

In the table below, you can find a summary of the different Weber Natural Gas Grill Models Features

Model Nb. Of Burners Hourly BTU Grates Cooking Space
Spirit 2 26,000 Porcelain 458 square inches
Spirit 3 36,000 Porcelain 536 square inches
Genesis 3 42,000 Stainless Steel 637 square inches
Summit 4 48,800 Stainless Steel 650 square inches
Summit 6 60,000 Stainless Steel 769 square inches

With a Weber natural gas grill you will not have to be concerned about running out of charcoal or propane. Additionally, propane recipients could be heavy even though the use of propane is an option in these gas grills. The use of charcoal can be messy at times. These types of grills also make things a little easier by supplying matchless starting, extra side burners and a continuous flow of fuel anytime you need it and for as long as you need it also.

Some Recent Reviews of the Weber Summit S-470 Natural Gas Grill:

5.0 out of 5 stars First time weber owner
I had been looking for a new grill. I have always used 100-150 dollar propane models and had the opportunity to shop in a higher price range. After months of research online and with locals who had several different models (weber, napolean) and looking at warranty and features I settled on the 2-470 in natural gas. First, natural gas is fantastic. This is my first time using it but gets hot extremely fast and you never run out. I have now done a roast on the spit and it turned out fantastic. My buddy that owns a more expensive napolean grill is envious of the stow away motor that is right there and ready to be used. His is in a box on a shelf and an after thought always. Steaks are great on the sear station. It did take some getting use to. It is so much hotter than my old grill could ever get. Nice sear marks on the steak, but they cook relatively fast compared to my old grill. Nice char on the outside and still pink and moist in the center. I also purchase the weber grill basket and consider this a must as well. Vegetables of all sorts are fantastic in this and my three old daughter loves the grilled shrimp we do in the basket. This grill is pricey but it is definitely as advertised. Nice features, easy setup (really took around 20 minutes at most) and cooks fantastic. Couldnt be happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber Summit NG Grill
A bit difficult to get started. Needed accessories to connect to NG pipe extending from house. Then had hard time getting gas to flow first time. Had to disconnect and then reconnect quick connect several times before I finally got flow. After that everything has worked beautifully. Highly recommend the unit

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber S-470 Warehouse Deals
This grill was an outstanding deal from Warehouse Deals, Inc. The delivery was fast, efficient and on-time. Came crated and was delivered to porch. The value from Warehouse Deals was incredible – less than half price anywhere else. I now scour this website regularly looking for similar deals. On top of that, the Weber grill is the best that I have ever used. It gets very hot for a quick grilling of a steak (to sear in the juice & flavor) but also can cook more slowly. Built in rotisserie and infrared burner did a great job on a whole chicken. Love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Weber Summit: The Best They Got
I’ve owned a Weber Summit S-470, plumbed for natural gas, for about 2 months – my first gas grill. Grilling is easier and more delicious than I ever imagined. I did a lot of research before I bought it, so here is what you need to know if you’re new to gas grills, new to Weber, or new to the Summit line:

1) Weber sells most of the gas grills sold in America. Their customer service is legendary. Go hit up their website and look at their warranty info. 25 years, no questions asked replacements on some parts, like the grill hood; 2 years replacement even on high wear items like the burners. There are people grilling away happily on 30 year old Weber gas grills without any problems; so definitely take into account that the warranty and customer service is part of what you’re paying for.

2) The S-470 is mostly stainless steel. There is stainless and stainless; to keep their pricepoint, in 2008 Weber switched from grade 304 stainless to grade 420. People in demanding environments (humidity, etc) find that the 420 doesn’t hold up quite as well to the elements. You can buy a lower-end, yet feature-identical grill for a similar price in the ‘enameled’ (E-XXX) series; but when they rust out, you’ll need to replace the panel. I think my grill looks great and has held up great so far; time will tell.

3) The grill grates are thick 9.5 mm stainless steel rods. They can be scoured with a brass bristle brush with no fear of damage. The thicker the grate, the more heat transfer into your steak- that is how you get a good sear. These are as thick as they come.

4) The S-470 has a LOT of burner for the cooking area. If you fire up all 4 main burners, the sear burner, the IR burner and the smoker burner, you’re putting nearly 70,000 BTU under the hood. The grill will go over 800 degrees on a hot day. That’s the other way you get a good sear.

5) The non-IR Weber sear station is just an extra 10,600 BTU burner, sandwiched in between main burners number 2 and 3. It heats up that small middle part of the grill, way hotter than it otherwise would have gotten. Then, when you put your steak down, you get a good sear. There are infrared (IR) sear stations out there in other brands, but they take up a lot of room on the grill grates – space you can’t use when you’re not searing. (For IR only grills, you should know about TEC – they have a neat patent, no one else’s IR works the way theirs does – but now we’re talking very expensive equipment that only does one thing, sear with IR, and costs even more than the Summit.) The Weber sear station is great for me – you can even sear a whole salmon fillet and it won’t stick or fall apart, which I really didn’t believe until I tried it.

6) The IR roto burner is something I would not have known to ask for, but now I don’t know how I lived without it. It makes the juiciest chicken, with the most delicious skin, that you can ever possibly imagine. In my house it is agreed that the “roto bird” is the best feature of this grill, hands down. A 5 lb bird spins to done in 45-60 minutes.

7) The smoker box is sort of difficult to get good results with and the smoke dirties up the grill. If you want to smoke food low and slow, and you’re thinking this grill is going to be just as good as a dedicated smoker unit, you’ll be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you want your meats to have just a hint of wood smoke flavor, so they taste like they came off a high-temperature charcoal grill, you can make that happen.

8) Weber makes 3 lower end grill models: the Genesis, the Spirit, and the Ducane Affinity series (branded under the Ducane name, obviously). A sear unit and a non-IR rotisserie unit are planned for the Genesis EP-330 series in 2011, so you are getting close to the S-470 feature set. The only diff between the Spirit and the Ducane (besides price) is that the Ducane is wholly fabbed in China, whereas some assembly of the Spirit is done in the USA.

9) If you’re completely new to gas grilling, you will need to first decide on propane versus natural gas. This review is for the natural gas model. You need a gas ‘stub’ out of your house to use natural gas, and if you don’t know what I mean, you probably also need pro installation to avoid blowing yourself up. Propane is easier to startup but far costlier over time, and you need to always keep an extra propane bottle around and constantly schlep your empties back to Wal-Mart. An NG grill will actually save you a little money if you use A/C, as you won’t be heating the kitchen (and then cooling it again) for your cooks. Won’t be getting steak grease on the inside of your kitchen windows either.

10) Kebabs, squabs, game hens, whole chickens, lamb, suckling pig, pork butt, pork loin, and any kind of beef or sausage – burgers, dogs, brats, Polish, whatever – it’s all good on the grill. Did I mention fresh corn on the cob?! For your vegan friends: skewers of eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, onions, squash, zucc, and whatever else is garden-fresh will soon become smash hits. Seriously. My buddy actually looked happy to be vegetarian when I served him his plate; he’s trying to lose weight, poor soul. A lot of people grill flatbread pizza too; I can’t eat wheat so I haven’t gone there.

11) Lotta books about grilling out there. Bobby Flay, who is grill crazy, has written like a dozen and I have a few; they’re full of good ideas. You won’t go wrong at any of his restaurants either. I ran into the guy eating at B+B in Vegas not long ago and sent him a nice bottle of wine to thank him. He’s great.

12) Gotta clean your grill. Weber makes a 3 or 4 piece utensil kit as do many others. You need a brass brush, long tongs, and a big spatula. I never use the two-tined grill fork. A wide putty knife also helps for scraping crud out of the drip pan; potholders, heat resistant mitts, and an apron are also useful.

In case it wasn’t obvious, this grill is one of the best things ever to happen to me in my eating life. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I have no regrets. Whatever you do after reading this review, make sure you go get yourself a gas grill. If you can’t afford the new one you want, it’s easy to refurb an old Craigslist grill with a little help from Weber customer service – the warranty comes with the grill. So pretty much you gotta get one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nervous at first, but Amazon does it again…
I am a regular purchaser on Amazon, use Amazon Prime, but my purchases have been limited to relatively low dollar items. When I went looking for a high-end grill locally, I thought I would check Amazon to see if they sold the one I wanted. There it was for several hundreds less. And with no tax and free shipping, it was a great deal cost-wise. So the final hurdle for me was buying something from Amazon that was almost $2000 and risk problems on my end when it arrived. The two immediate issues are delivery and assembly. If I had bought it locally, the merchant would have taken care of it, for a fee.

Turns out, neither were an issue at all. The shipper Amazon used was top-notch. They delivered within a window and showed up when they said they would. They put the grill exactly where I wanted it on my deck–do not underestimate how big a deal this is. And assembly from the box was surprisingly easy. It took me about 20 minutes.

This is the first natural gas grill I have owned, and I see a clear difference from liquid propane. The grill gets hotter and comes up to temperature faster. If you can go natural, do it.

As far as the grill in general, I am very happy so far. Solid construction. The sear station works as advertised. Along with the high heat of natural gas, you can get that nice crust on the outside of a steak while keeping the inside rare if you want it. The heavy duty grates are key and the “flavorize bars” that cover the flame work well to minimize flame-ups. I like where they put the rotisserie heating element, higher up away from the grates. In other brands, like a WOLF I recently used, the element is immediately behind the grates and can be damaged if you are not careful when cleaning the grate with those standard wire brush/scraper tools.

Will update if anything comes up.

Weber Summit S-420 Video Review

Some Recent Reviews of the Weber Summit S-420 Natural Gas Grill:

5.0 out of 5 stars I love it, By Charlie
I replaced a grill that had cast iron everything. It would take 20 minutes or longer to get the grill to 400 degrees. This new Weber takes only about 5 minutes to hit 500 degrees. I love the 4 burner front to back design. It is a design that gets me back to the days of indirect heat cooking I got from my Weber charcoal grill. I have cooked steak, burgers, chicken and a Wisconsin favorite brats. This is the first time I have a side burner on a grill. I’ve used it to heat a few things and appreciate it.

I live in an area that has a constant breeze that was always a problem for other grills. The wind would get into the grill between the base and the cover and mess with the flame and cool the food. This grill has an inner cover that connects to the base and blocks the wind. This makes for very even temperature.

I was told this grill is manufactured in China and I was a little nervious about the quality of it. As far as I can tell, it is very well made and all the stainless is very thick. I looked at a couple other stainless steel grills and there is a noticable difference. Even the lower line of Webers have thinner metal.

The grill comes preassembled except for the two side tables. Two screws each and the grill was pretty much done. The grates and flavor bars had to be put into place. I was preheating in no time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love the grill – hate the rain, By Owen Lloyd (Washington)
I’ve been using the grill for the last couple weeks and I must say I absolutely love how it cooks. It does a fantastic job. There are many pluses about this grill and I read many positive reviews before getting it, but I’m focus my attention on what I feel is a fairly hefty design flaw with this model. When it rains, the water channels down the back of the top cover (the part that doesn’t move) and wraps around under neither and drips into the stainless steal grease tray, which then funnells the water into the alumimun grease tin. The water also appears to be all over the bottom shelf area after a good rain. I’m not sure if this is because it’s overflowing out of the aluminum tin, or whether it’s coming in somewhere else. The result is, if the BBQ is out in the rain, you’ll have a very wet interior. The next problem that occurs because of the moisture is the electric starters don’t always function as expected. I’ve had to start my BBQ with a lighter a couple times now. However, once it heats up (which it doesn’t very quickly) the starters dry out and then function normally again (this is what the online help for the BBQ states to would happen). I’m also starting to see rust forming on the interior rivets. My guess is they weren’t designed to have that much water around them, but it’s concerning as I was hoping this grill would have no problems lasting many years.

I have called Weber support and told them about this issue – they said I need to keep a cover on it and are sending me out one. I have to say the people on the support line were very friendly. I just wish they had a solution to the real problem, other than covering your grill. If I’d just bought this thing to look pretty, I wouldn’t care, but I use it everyday for at least one meal and I live in the Pacific Northwest were BBQing in rain is a common practice. Waiting for the grill to cool down before putting the cover on is a pain and not something I always remember each night.

I’ve also looked at the Genesis series at Home Depot and noticed they have a lip on the back to help prevent the water from coming in. According to the guy at Home Depot this does help a fair bit and definitely more than the design on the Summit.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Terrific Grill, By Larry A. Hollar “Author” (La Junta, CO United States)
The grill was pretty easy to set up. Since my back yard is open and exposed, I will chain this beauty down…but there is no easy way to do that, I’ll have to drill through the stainless steel.
Reading reviews of other models, I knew that it was going to run hot. But caution! The book of recipes that comes with the grill will make you burn everything up. It does warn that they are extra hot before they get broken in (dirty) but that doesn’t say it all. I very nearly ruined 3 meals before I started watching the meat instead of following their instructions to leave the lid down as much as possible.
Always adding olive oil to your meat will make things better. Having a grill that will heat to 500 degrees or more is great, it is easier to clean than my old one. You can bake a pizza in there.
I did not follow the advice from a review on a similar model, I’ve gone ahead and purchased the Webber cover. While the stainless steel is easy to maintain, the rain and snow leaves too much dirt on it, so I’ll cover it in winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars A workhorse with a warranty
I agree that this baby heats fast and holds its own in the wind. After 10 months one igniter stopped working some of the time, and Weber has a new part on its way to me, no problem. Not just a new igniter, but the whole manifold with four igniters, in order to save me having to do the plumbing.
It is easy to take apart to do the suggested maintenance. The first couple times that you heat this up to 5-600 degrees, be very careful with cooking time. It will be less than most recipes call for, they are used to grills that don’t reach these temperatures, or don’t hold them.
Weber’s Big Book of Grilling is a bit too much reading and the recipes aren’t to my taste. But this Summit grill is a real joy with which to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!
This is my fourth Weber but my first Summit model. The previous Genesis models that I owned came with quite a bit of assembly required so I was surprised to see the Summit come off the truck pretty much all assembled. All I had to do as to follow the simple instructions for adding the left and right work surfaces/burner and a couple of other things and I was in business.

It works like all Webers … just plain excellent! I still miss the left and right side fold up work surfaces that disappeared in the redesign that happened a couple of years back. If I have one complaint it would be that if you opt for the side burner you really have only one work surface and that is on the left side. Being right handed it would have been better for me to have the work surface on the right side and the burner on the left, but I can live with it.

Mine is the natural gas model and I have found little difference in cooking times from the propane models I enjoyed earlier.

Webers are not cheap, and you can buy a whole lot more grill (read hardware) for the money, but if you spend some time inspecting the other models and doing some comparisons you can quickly see why the Weber is a better product.

3.0 out of 5 stars Please consider the S-470 instead – Much more versatile!
The Summit grills are excellent, but very expensive. Relative to the top-rated (Consumer Reports) E-series at less than half the cost, the S-420 is not a particularly good value (hence the 3 stars).

However, if you are considering spending ~$1.5k on a grille, look closely at the Weber S-470.
For an additional ~20% in cost, the three additional burners add a *HUGE* amount of versatility:
1) Built-in smoke-box (with separate burner control) is extremely convenient, and works well.
With our old Weber, smoking was difficult to control and I never got good results. Now I smoke anything other than thin cuts. Ribs are amazing… :-) The smoke box does slightly reduce the available grill area, but the S-470 can still handle a large load. The dedicated smoker burner also acts as an excellent additional indirect heating source, even if you are not smoking.
2) Extra “searing” burner generates crazy amounts of heat in the middle section, enough to match any charcoal fire. This works extremely well for steaks.
3) Added infra-red burner makes browning on the rotisserie easy.
4) The combination of these added burners enables extremely rapid pre-heating. Our S-470 hits >700F in less than 10 minutes with all 7 burners active!

If you shop on-line carefully, you may find the S-470 at sale prices even closer to the S-420 than the 20% gap in list price. At the time we bought our S470, the street-price gap was less than 10%.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Terrific Grill
The grill was pretty easy to set up. Since my back yard is open and exposed, I will chain this beauty down…but there is no easy way to do that, I’ll have to drill through the stainless steel.
Reading reviews of other models, I knew that it was going to run hot. But caution! The book of recipes that comes with the grill will make you burn everything up. 5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price …
I was very hesitant to pay more for my outside grill then the oven in my kitchen, but I must say I’m impressed! There’s a reason you don’t see many bad reviews on weber grills, this thing is solid and well designed! It came mostly put together, I just had to put on the side pieces and tray holder in the cabinet. It came with everything I needed to attach it to the natural gas line built into my house, with the exception of thread sealant. Each burner starts with one click, and the grill heats up quickly. The grates are very heavy duty & stainless rods, so no more worrying about having the wrong bristles on my brush. I’ll be using this grill for many years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Summit S-420 NG Grill
I like the grill very much. It is well engineered as you would expect a Weber to be and it cooks great. Why did I wait so long to buy it?

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Grill I’ve ever owned
Researched mid-priced grills from a dozen manufacturers and kept coming back to Weber. Had owned a propane Genesis model for 10 years before and, with a couple replacement “flavorizer” bars, it was going strong when we moved (left it for the new homeowner). The Summit S-420 model is even more sturdily built and has a larger grilling surface. The “Snap” ignition system is incredible; a flame igniter for each burner tube (no more “crossover” ignition)lights first time, every time.
Comes almost completely assembled which is great for quick start up and use, but makes for a very heavy delivery package (about 235 pounds). Driver needed my assistance to get it off the truck and into my garage.
Bottom line? Price is quite a bit higher than home improvement store standard stocked grills of equal size, but the quality of this Weber is substantially better. A great grill for the price.
